Poison gas was probably the most feared of all weapons in World War One. The Germans were the first to use it at the battle of Ypres in 1915. They delivered chlorine by the use of pressurized cylinders. They would throw it or shoot the cylinders but then they decided artillery worked better. Chlorine gas was developed so it could be used on soldiers in trenches even when no attack was going on.

The gas was made in hope that many of the German enemies would die. Germany was surprised by the impact of the chlorine gas. Although many men died in war, many more died of poison gas related injuries years after the war. They do not take into account the number of men who survived but could not hold a job once they had been released from the army. Some damage done was blisters, lungs, organs, make penises fall off and blindness.

Chlorine gas was principally used during the early portion of WWI and was primarily effective at that point because it was used unexpectedly and therefore troops were not properly prepared or equipped. In the very high concentrations required to be lethal, chlorine gas results in a greenish cloud with a strong odor. This made it fairly easy to detect and avoid using gas masks, which were much more readily available as the use of weaponized gas became more frequent during the war.

The reason chlorine gas was used in WW I is that it was hoped that it would prove to be an efficient way to kill lots of enemy soldiers all at once, which would be easier than having to shoot them all with rifles or blow them up with artillery shells. This did not actually work all that well, since chlorine gas blows in the wind, and can come back to poison your own soldiers quite easily. It is also not nearly as toxic as some of the other poison gases that were introduced later, such as mustard gas, which is truly horrible stuff (but also blows in the wind).
