The trenches were very un-hygenic and were a breeding ground for disease.

There were many animals and bugs in the trenches. The rats were the size of cats and spread disease as well as often attacking injured or sleeping soldiers. Frogs swam in the puddles and beetles and slugs climbed the sides of the trenches. Because of the wet soldiers often got trench foot, and lice could cause trench fever.
