Yamamoto was called on to lead the Japanese Navy into World War II by planning the takeover of the Pacific Islands while the Army took over China and other countries.

Having attended college in the US, he knew that if the US fleet was not sunk at Pearl Harbor, (it was not) that the US citizens would rise up with great rage and beat the socks off of Japan. (Which they did) He knew that the US had twice as many people and about 10 times the heavy industrial capacity as Japan did.
