The Declaration of Independence told King George III of Britain that the colonists did not consider themselves his subjects any longer. This was treason, because it was overthrowing their government. Treason was regarded as a very serious crime and was punishable by death. By signing their names, the men who signed made it absolutely clear that they supported the overthrow of George III; they could not hide behind anonymity.
