They needed the supplies that were going down the Volga river .
In my opinion there is two main points that allowed the Allies to win the war in the European theater. The first one is when the Russians were able to stall the Germans at Stalingrad. If the Russians would have lost Stalingrad Germany would've had little resistance on their march to Moscow. The second happened when Allied forces were able to halt the last major offensive of the Germans in the Ardennes Mountains of Belgium all so known as the Battle of the Bulge.
There are 3 ways which the Germans could of won the Battle of Stalingrad. The 3 ways are;To have better battlefield conditions (could of done it earlier or later)Could of tried to get more logistic supplies to the city with air and tank reinforcements.Instead of Hitler splitting the army group into 2 smaller army groups, he should of sent all to Stalingrad or to the oil fields then to the city of Stalingrad.
The battle of Shiloh was important because Tennessee secede from the union
The Stalingrad battle was costly because it was a war of attrition between Russian and German forces who fought street by street and house by house . Hitler and Stalin because of their egos would not allow their efforts to seize Stalingrad , Stalin's namesake city , to be thwarted by their arch rival so they made extraordinary efforts in terms of men and material to win the city .
The victory over the Germans at the battle for Stalingrad on the Eastern Front meant that the Germans were effectively fighting a two-front war . This meant that the Germans were forced to divide the bulk of their resources to fight both the Russians on the Eastern Front as well as the Allies on the Western Front . The Allies knew that complete victory over the Germans was then inevitable for had the Germans defeated the Russians then the Germans would then be able to commit their full resources to thwart any effort on the part of the Allies to invade and defeat the Germans who no longer had two fronts to fight on in the war . The Russian victory at Stalingrad meant that the Russians could indeed defeat German efforts and the Allies were encouraged by this who were then committed to the eventual defeat of Germany now having confidence that their Russian allies were capable of turning the tide of war against the Germans .
It was the USSR which were victorious in the Battle of Stalingrad.
The battle for the city on the Volga river began July 17, 1942 and ended in a German defeat Feb. 2, 1943 and from there the Russians went on the win the war against the Germans .
Main thing was the weather/climate and their knowledge about the battle before the battle.
The Germans are essentially run out of supplies in a foreign land and the Russians must fight to survive in their homeland. Very much the same for Napoleon army before that and the French and American in Indochina later on.
Because the Battle of Stalingrad was one of the turning points of WWII. (i. e. The Germans could not win, and after the battle the Soviet Red Army started to advance into Western Europe. )

Yes, the Russians won the Battle Of Moscow. The Germans were not prepared to fight for more than 4 months in the cold. Winter froze weapons and tanks. The Russians had an advantage because they were in there own country and were prepared for the harsh winters in Moscow!
