Why is coal important to West Virgina's economy?

Coal is a solid, non-renewable resource which is used to produce electricity and heat through combustion. The majority of coal is used to generate electricity so this is probably the reason why coal is economically important in West Virginia as it is in every country. Although coal has many other uses, by taking out by-products it can create: Plastics, Synthetic fibers, tar, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals. It also can be made into iron which is nescessary to making steel. I hope this information helps you. Cheers, Tom

Why did the demand for coal spike up during the Industrial Revolution?

Coal was being used to fuel industrial plants, to make steel, and to power the railroads.

Where was the steel industry located?

To produce iron and steel you require lots of heavy iron ore and lots of coal. Transporting these long distances is possible via massive container ships or trains but it is quite expensive and has only become an option relativly recently. Many steel and iron industries are located near to the coal and iron ore mines to reduce transport costs. The world's biggest producer of steel is china. Some of them are located in North Eastern USA eg. Pittsburg/Pennsylvania. Water was needed to transport the heavy products and raw materials which is why they were located near wide rivers and lakes. The places where they were manufactured were on huge coal fields (right at the Raw material source).
