Why was the Battle of Chancellorsville an important victory for the the confederacy union?

For the Confederates it was a great victory as the Army of the Potomac under the command of Joseph Hooker was defeated. Many military historians say that this battle was Lee's greatest victory because of the way he outwitted his opponent while his army was outnumbered. Victory came at a tragic cost though for the Confederates as it was here that General Thomas J."Stonewall" Jackson was wounded by friendly fire. He died 8 days later. For the Union it showed that the "crisis in Command" continued in the Eastern Theatre.

It showed the world the genius of Lee as a commander,and repeled once again a much larger invading union army. The battle was fought the first week of May,1863,and had Lee facing General Joseph Hooker and his army of 120,000 men. Lee had less than half that number. But with the aid of Stonewall Jackson's corps,who Lee sent on a flanking march on Hooker's exposed right flank, Lee sent Hooker down to a crushing defeat. The battle showed the audacity once again of Lee as a commander, and reinforced the inferiority that federal generals were beginning to feel when they faced Lee. Lee always seemed to dominate his opponents plans,and was worth an army to the Confederacy. Had a less able man been in command, it is probable that Hooker could have marched his huge army straight through the rebels and ended the war at that point.
