Why was the Yorktown battle important?

There have been two notable battles at Yorktown in US History. One was much more important than the other. The Battle of Yorktown in the American Revolutionary War forced a British surrender and led to the independence of the American colonies from Great Britain. The battle at Yorktown during the Union's Peninsula campaign in the US Civil War, was important in terms of the campaign, but in no way altered that battle to any significant manner and less of an impact on the Civil War. Nor did it have the huge, world wide impact of the Yorktown battle in the American Revolution.

The American Revolutionary War came to a head at Yorktown, Virginia. Under George Washington both American and French troops had corned the British there. The French fleet sealed the fate of the British and prevented the British fleet in New York to perform any rescue operations.

The British held out from October 6, to October 19, 1781.

This surrender by the British led to the House of Commons to authorize King George III to begin peace negotiations with the American rebels.

In a manner of speaking, the "new Rebels", meaning the Confederates, held on to Yorktown and Union Major General George B. McClellan believed that he needed to drive the Confederates out of Yorktown before proceeding westward on the Peninsula that led to Richmond.

He was forced to use a siege to oust the Rebels and this delayed his advance towards Richmond. Many historians have criticized this long siege delay, and have stated that the capture of Yorktown was not required. McClellan thought otherwise and therefore his advance to Richmond was delayed.

On April 4, 1862, Union forces advanced slowly on Yorktown. The siege lasted until May 3rd when the Rebels evacuated. Although it may have been possible to take Yorktown by force, McClellan used a siege and this caused month's delay for the Union advance. Because McClellan had a huge numerical advantage, many McClellan critics saw the siege to be unnecessary.
