The first triumvirate was unsuccessful basically because of personal egos. They were an unlikely trio to begin with, Pompey and Crassus hating each other, and Caesar using them to see to his interests while he was away in Gaul. Crassus was killed trying to win personal glory, Caesar was in Gaul winning personal glory and Pompey, always wavering politically, was won over to the senate's way of thinking with the promise of an army and personal glory.
