Although no significant land-holdings were exchanged, the War of 1812 was not pointless. The United States gained new respect in the world-community, faced down the intransigence of Great Britain in respect to legitimate complaints by the United States concerning its political integrity, established firm control over its western borders (if only at the expense of Native American inhabitants), and also enjoyed a widespread rise of patriotism throughout its states and territories.
