Why was there a Battle of Britain?

Because Great Britain was all that stood in the way of Germany taking full control of what is mainly now Europe. But Great Britain put up a strong air defence against the Luftwaffe (who were attempting to soften up defences by bombing) which resulted in air to air combat, mainly involving Supermarine Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes of the RAF and Messerschmitt BF109's etc of the Luftwaffe.

There was a Battle of Britain because Great Britain had declared war on Germany so Germany sent bombers to bombard British cities, especially London throughout the Battle of Britain. The Germans eventually lost the Battle of Britain and then made the decision not to invade Britain through the English Channel. Great Britain had huge radar antennaes picking up signals from German bombers which provided enough warning to send fighters into the air to shoot the bombers down.

There was a Battle of Britain because Hitler had decreed preparations for an invasion of Britain and the first step was to eliminate British defensive air power. Bombing and strafing of eastern English airfields was the Luftwaffe's first tactic, in an effort to destroy the RAF's fighters and bases.
The RAF quickly made decisions to deploy to many smaller grass airfields, to shorten pilot training and to bring more fighters into service quickly. All of these had a salient effect on defeating the Luftwaffe onslaught and winning the Battle of Britain.
