Sugarcane and tobacco growth were the primary means of economically supporting the colonies (especially in the Caribbean) and those industries require heavy labor. Unfortunately, the Native American / Indigenous Population began to die off rapidly due to the inhumane strain under which they were put and diseases to which they were exposed. Africans, by contrast were more used to hard labor and were resistant to Old World diseases.
