Vermont was never claimed by a colonial power. It was considered part of French North America, but a Royal Charter was never proclaimed. The Constitution of 1777 is one of the oldest National Documents in North America, predating the U. S. Constituion by ten years. This remains the basis for the recurring call, from time to time, to reexamine our National Status.
