The history of the development of flight is littered with wreckage. The first planes were usually flawed in some way. It's actually trickier than you would think designing a machine that will stay aloft for more than a few seconds and not come crashing down with a nasty thump.

Some of the reasons:

  • too many wings attached and the wings all caved in
  • wrong wing size, too short so there was not enough lift to get off the ground
  • wing structure not sturdy enough resulting in the wings disintegrating
  • engines not powerful enough to lift the craft off the ground
  • craft unbalanced because weight distribution was wrong.
  • really, really, really impractical design
