Starting about 1000 years ago, rumors began to spread through Christian Europe about the evil things Jews were supposed to be doing. Not only had they murdered God, as the Catholic Church taught at the time, but they poisoned wells causing the Black Plague and required the blood of Christian children for their secret rituals. Furthermore, more and more countries had put limits on Jewish activities, banning them from all trades other than moneylending. As a result, Jews were the bankers. When the nobles ran up big debts, one solution was to force the Jews to flee the country. This forced them to sell off their assets -- mostly uncollected debts. In many cases, the king bought these, gaining huge power over the nobles who had run up the biggest debts. So, over the years, many countries banned expelled their Jewish populations. Later, in th 20th century, after the Arab-Israeli conflict began, many Muslim countries also expelled Jews, usually making no reference to these earlier Christian expulsions and frequently making it clear that the goal was simply to force refugees into Israel in order to weaken it.
