As the war progressed, US citizens realized that this was a civil war, and not a foreign, communist force trying to take over the world. Also, stories about horrible massacres where US soldiers were ordered to kill everyone in certain villages (men, women, boys, girls, babies, (EVERYONE)) got out to the public, who were outraged. There are some heroic stories such as one where a unit was told by their commanding officer to kill everyone in a village, and a US helocopter was overhead. When the pilot of the helocopter saw what was happening, he put the helocopter between the US forces and the fleeing Vietnamese and told his gunner to shoot if anyone kept killing the Vietnamese. Overall however, it is really sad to know that the soldiers were used by the government to fight a political war.

I hope this helped.

The return of military veterans from Vietnam was largely one of what can be called non events. For the most part many soldiers sent to Southeast Asia were draftees. Because of atrocities by some American soldiers, this was unfairly placed on many more who committed no such acts. Movies about Vietnam, such as Full Metal Jacket, unfairly depicted many Americans as either cruel or not professional.
