Why were ghettos established?

Ghetto's were made in order to contain the Jewish population. The ghetto's were a stage of Hitler's final solution where he assessed the Jewish population before hailing them off to death camps.

Sadly, for several thousand years, Christians (mostly Catholics at first, but later, Lutherans and others) were taught that the Jews had killed Jesus and were deserving of punishment; if it was not possible to physically punish Jews, then isolating them was the next best thing. So, Jews were forbidden from having opportunities for education (many schools refused to accept them, a practice that continued into the 1900s); they were denied careers in many professions; and their social mobility was severely restricted. Ghettoizing the Jews became the first step in a campaign of demonizing them. Ghettos were established to keep the Jews with "their own," and thus unable to "pollute" the Christian population. (And while we are discussing Jews and ghettos in this answer, we should also remember that throughout the ages, ghettoizing has been a tactic frequently used by a bigoted majority when trying to ostracize and stigmatize a powerless minority, and keep them powerless. That is why, for example, black people in the US were relegated to ghettos.)

It should also be noted that the Jews did not kill Jesus; and in modern times, there is much more harmony and tolerance between Jews and Christians. But life was not so harmonious in eras like the middle ages, a time where few people were educated and myth and rumor was easily spread. Spreading fear of the Jews was a favorite tactic of rulers and political leaders (by getting the non-Jewish citizens to blame the Jews for every problem, these leaders remained in power, because it kept the public distracted). Putting onerous taxes on Jews, preaching against them, accusing them of being criminals, and forcing them into ghettos was all a part of life for Jews back then. And sad to say, these practices continued for centuries.
