But then he regretted his decision to divorce her and asked his advisers what to do. They suggested that he hold a contest to pick out a new wife. Historically, there was more to this story. All the contestants were his after the contest. So it was quite a gamble for Esther. Luckily, she fared the best of any of the contestants, since he chose her as the new queen.
In Western society, there are other motives. They could include having women to represent a state and give the area they represent a beautiful face. Or the motives could include showcasing beautiful women, or even average women who have certain virtues and ideals.
There are also reality show type pageants which exist more to show the "warts" of more average women, or to use for "before and after" type scenarios. For instance, there is "The Swan," a cosmetic surgery pageant. Average or even homely women who are hard on their luck go under the knife and then are judged by the finished results.

From my own personal experiences I can personally say that beauty pageants are a wonderful thing. They can teach young ladies great things. Poise, to become social with new people, stage presence, and that certain need to take care of yourself. Beauty pageants were such a great thing for me. As a young child I had no confidence within myself. Though, pageants made me learn that I can be beautiful. They made me feel good about myself, and they also helped me become to love myself.
