Answer:In 1914, you have to remember, war was seen as an adventure. Many people believed that the first World War would be over by Christmas, so thousands of young men rushed to enlist at the local regimental headquarters. "Show the huns home, and rush back with a chestful of medals", one veteran recalled how he felt.

Back in 1914, there was also a strong sense of nationalism, which fueled the fire in young men's hearts when they enlisted. For example, the bulk of the Canadian population at the time was of British decent, and therefore, many men signed up to defend the motherland. There were parades in the street the day war was declared. The world was at war, and the lads were off on an adventure. If only they knew what would really happen.
