Emperor Menelik II
Ethiopia also known as Abyssinia was invaded by Italy in 1935 under Fascist leader, Benito Mussolini. He wanted to boost Italian self esteem following their defeat by the Ethiopians at the Battle of Adowa in 1896. He also wanted to emulate Hitler's plans to expand Germany.
he invaded in 1935 this was known as the abysinian crisis. Mussolini (italy's dictator) invaded abyssinia because he had tried to take over abyssina in 1896 but was defeated at the battle of Adowa. and thiis was his chance for revenge. he was also jealous of Hitler's rearmament in germany. he wanted to let everyone no he was the the main dictator in Europe. The league tried to stop him in various ways, all of which failed. :( they offered to arbitrate in the dispute (this was rejected by italy). They also imposed sanctions on italy, though these didnt include oil, coal or iron! i hope this has helped (i only know all this because im doing GCSE history) ;)
The invasion took place in 1935, and although the civilized world was disgusted, no countries declared war on Italy in an attempt to save Ethiopia. The League of Nations proved itself largely powerless to stop this aggression. Ethiopia had a small and poorly equipped army which was no match for the modern Italian army and air force. Italy also used poison gas against the Ethiopians, as Japan had done against the Manchurians five years earlier. After Mussolini entered World War II, the British defeated Italian forces in Ethiopia, and Addis Ababa became the first capital city liberated from the Axis.
Some issues in Ethiopia's recent history include: Countries such as Britain and France had conquered smaller nations in the "Scramble for Africa" in the nineteenth century. In 1896, Italy had attempted to expand in eastern Africa by adding Abyssinia to her conquests (which included Eritrea and Somaliland), but the Italians were heavily defeated by the Abyssinians at the Battle of Adowa. In 1934, Abyssinia (Ethiopia) was still one of the few independent states in a European-dominated Africa. In 1928, Italy had signed a treaty of friendship with Abyssinian leader Haile Selassie, but Italy was already secretly planning to invade the African nation. In December 1934, a dispute at the Wal Wal oasis along the border between Abyssinia and Italian Somaliland gave Italian dictator Benito Mussolini an excuse to respond with aggression. Italian troops stationed in Somaliland and Eritrea were instructed to attack Abyssinia. Overwhelmed by the use of tanks and mustard gas, the Abyssinians stood little chance. The capital, Addis Ababa, fell in May 1936 and Haile Selassie was removed from the throne and replaced by the king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel.

According to wikipedia it is near the northern border of Ethiopia (in east Africa).
Ethiopia was not colonized because it resisted Italy's colonization efforts by winning the Battle of Adowa. Although Italy came back to avenge this loss and rule Ethiopia for five years this is not considered as colonization as it lasted for a short period of time and during this time Italy could not control the guerrilla fighters who were fighting to free their country. Ethiopia was very well guarded by its environment and surrounding empires, which played a key role in warding off European invaders. Ethiopians were also very resistant and successful in defeating European powers.
