Only one of the nine defendants was pardoned. In 1976 Clarence Norris, who was nineteen at the time of his arrest in 1931, received a pardon signed by George Wallace. At the time Norris was believed to be the only surviving defendant. Norris lived until 1989.
Recently the Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center in Scottsboro, AL, has spearheaded an effort to pardon and exonerate the other eight defendants. A letter asking the Gov. Robert Bentley to take the appropriate actions to correct this injustice was mailed on August 15, 2012.
For the latest information on the Scottsboro pardons, check the museum's website, and also the online version of Alabama Heritage magazine.
