The Veterans were badly treated not for political Drama , but for media -caused drama over alleged atrocities committed by military intelligence or a few solidiers AS well as the belief that the war was more concerned with the control of the opium trade then it was over the sovereign rights of a nation and it's people and that nation requested armed assistance.

There was also a popular revelation of the military experimenting with drugs which despite the Flower-Power movements were not viewed lightly in terms of the government deploying state altering substances and still making locally used substances illegal.

Why was the Vietnam War unique?

The US Civil War (1861-1865) and the Vietnam War (1961-1975) are the only wars in which US citizens experienced a military defeat. In both wars the NORTH defeated the SOUTH. In both wars the Southerners/GI's fighting for South Vietnam were treated harshly (called and treated as "losers") by their fellow US Citizens. Even though the US Civil War was a victorious United States victory, the Confederates (Southerners) were still Americans. Secondly, the Vietnam War was our longest war, outlasting the American Revolutionary War by several years.
