Because they had a different religion than the catholic church, they valued knowledge and condemned the corruption of the church. You can read more on this in 'Huguenots and Jews of the Languedoc' that talks a lot about the Cathars (also called Albis).

Their beliefs annoyed the church quite a lot because they thought that we live in a material world created by the Devil, that's why there is so much sadness, because if God created the world, there wouldn't be as much suffering. The Cathars made vows of poverty and refused to kill because that was also the work of the devil.
