The south said that they need slave labor and the very large plantations, which covered hundreds of acres, required labor to bring in crops. They didn't have the large machines we have now and they had to be harvested mainly by hand.
The middle colonies were in between the northern colonies and southern colonies, and they did not depend on slaves as much as the southern colonies. And it was nicknamed the bread basket colonies. The southern colonies depended on slaves and was mostly made up of huge plantations. There wasn't really anything else...
