1776 is considered a turning point primarily due to the Declaration of Independence, which marked the formal assertion of the American colonies' intention to break free from British rule. This year galvanized revolutionary sentiment, leading to the Revolutionary War and the eventual establishment of the United States as an independent nation. Additionally, the ideas of liberty and self-governance articulated in this period influenced democratic movements worldwide, reshaping political ideologies and systems in many countries.

I wouldn't say it was a turning point. The Battle of Concord in April of 1775 was more a turning point, then there was the battle of Bunker Hill, and the siege of Boston. I think of it more as statement of reasons, purpose and facts to tell the world why they wanted to be free of the English crown.
It wasn't a turning point, it was the liberation of Western Europe. The turning point in Europe in WWII was the Battle Of Stalingrad.
