The terms themselves are demeaning to followers of other religions: BC, Before Christ; and AD, Anno Domini (the Year of our Lord). They imply recognition of Christ and, more importantly of 'our' Lord.

Consider the reasons for the terms BC and AD in the first place - the Roman abbot Dionysus Exiguus devised the new Christian calendar in 533 because he no longer wished Christians to use a callendar based, not on dates important to pagan gods, but merely on the ascension of a former emperor who happened to be pagan. His sensitivity answers the modern question.

The use of the modern terms BCE (Before Common Era, or Before Christian Era) and CE (Common Era, or Christian Era) is neutral as to religion. They do not offend Christianity and are acceptable to people of all faiths.

This is a trick question: if the ends of the object are not connected, you would get 101 pieces. If the object is something like a rubber band with no end piece, you would have 100 pieces.
