Jane Austen and the development of the Realist Novel
Realism attempts to emulate the state of things as they actually exist. So a realist writer could conceivably write about anything in reality as long as it's done as objectively as possible. To put it succinctly realism is the faithful representation of reality.
The first black person to write a novel is often considered to be Olaudah Equiano, whose autobiographical work "The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano" was published in 1789. However, the first novel published by a black woman in English is generally attributed to Harriet E. Wilson, whose book "Our Nig" was published in 1859. While Equiano's work is a narrative rather than a traditional novel, both figures are significant in the context of early black literature.
He wrote his memoirs while in exile at St. Helena but he also authored a romantic novella before he became noteworthy.
