If it taste ok, it is safe to drink.
Some Clarets can go very rusty with age (and very few clarets will mature as successfully as most Burgundies will) - but if the wine is 'corked' it will have a strong hydrogen sulphide (badd eggs) smell, and you won't be able to drink it anyway without a clothes peg over your nose.
And once in a while you find a wine which is ugly to look at, but very good indeed to drink.
