I know of one native American rite of passage for teen age apache girls. It starts at the rising of the morning star. The girl and her medicine man/woman walk out of the teepee. Throughout the whole ordeal the girl may not smile or admit and emotions. A basket of ceremonial objects and food is set in a large area or field. The girl(s) run to the basket toward the rising sun and circle the basket 3 times. She is then givin blessings by her medicine man/woman. A large ceremonial fire is then lit and the girl, her mother and sponsors must dance around it. The girl will dance all night without stopping. In the morning she is welcomed by her tribe and goes through one more test. She kneels down and her medicine man/woman puts white clay from ear to ear covering her mouth. She is then givin a special feather to symbolize her new life as a woman.

What are rites of passage?

Rite of passage often refers to a formal period of testing for young men and women, the successful completion of which allows them to be accepted into the world of adults. They most often have a connection to spirituality, or to the practices of specific religions, like Bar Mitzvah for Jewish boys and Bat Mitzvah for Jewish girls. The rite of Confirmation in some of the more sacramentally oriented churches is similar. In a broader sense, rites of passage can be thought of as any event or period of abrupt and unexpected life transformation that brings the person to a deeper and more mature understanding of what it is to be alive. Many world cultures have various practices related to the maturing of young people into adulthood, and many involve some rigorous, even harrowing requirements.
