If I understood your question correctly, first century is the period between 0 - 99 A.D. and 100 A.D. being the beginning of the 2nd century. So when someone tells you, for example, that invention X was created in the 16th century...they mean 1500s A.D.

Well from yr 0 to 100 was the 1st century, so 101 was in the second century, then the 200's would be the third century. And so on. 656=7th century, 1108= 12th century. 1980=20th century. 2000 was the beginning of the 21st century. In 2100, that will be the 22nd century. (as you probably know, a century is 100yrs if you're talking about time, it can also just mean 100)
