The peasant's obligations to the Lord of the Manor were based mostly on farming work. The peasant would work large proportions of their day on the land of their Lord, the rest of their day would be put toward farming for themselves and their family. This is why peasants often had large families, as they often did not have enough time to properly support their family and thus needed as many family members as possible to help with the farming.

In exchange for working on their Lord's land, peasants were given small plots of lands for themselves and their family. Aswell as the plot of land, peasants were promised protection by their Lords. That means the peasants or villeins had to work 5 days a week (weekwork they used to call it though)

Feudal lords are obligated to offer up soldiers and taxes to the king in exchange for essentially leasing the land from him, since in the feudal system, the king literally owns all the land s of his country. Unless the feudal lords get too powerful, then they can start dictating termstomthe king instead, like what happened in englad, when the magna carta was forced down the kings throat. Peasents living on feudal land must provide a percentage of their crop yield to the lord. Of course, they also had to buy the tools, water, seed, animals, etc. from th lord, which they could only pay for with a promise of future returns in crops. So in this way, peasents, or serfs, became bound to the land, living there only at the whim of the reigning feudal lord.

The peasants had to provide the lords with part of the crop, or the value of part of the crop. There were various ways this could be done.

The lords had to provide the peasants with a home, land to farm, and protection.

The peasants were tied to the land. They could not be bought or sold. They were not free to leave the land, but they had freedom in how they ran their lives otherwise. The lords were able to buy or sell the land, in many cases, but they were not free to evict the peasants. If they sold the land, the new buyer was buying the obligations to the peasants along with the land itself, and this was part of the security the peasants had.

The serfs were supposed to work on the manor and do whatever their superiors told them to do. The lord was supposed to allow his manor as a place of protection for the serfs - during the time of feudalism, this was very much needed - and a place to live.

The lords got the better end of the deal.

Why was feudalism invented?

Feudalism is a decentralized sociopolitical structure in which a weak monarchy attempts to control the lands through reciprocal agreements with regional leaders. Feudalism refers to the Medieval European political system composed of a set of reciprocal legal and military obligations among the warrior nobility. The word feudalism was not a medieval term but an invention of 16th century French and English lawyers to describe certain traditional obligations between members of the warrior aristocracy. The earliest known use of the term feudal was in the 17th century (1614), when the system it purported to describe was rapidly vanishing or gone entirely. No writers in the period in which feudalism was supposed to have flourished are known to have used the word itself.
