Merchants banded together to create guilds, and the guilds controlled prices and standards of trade.

In many places, the merchants and guilds of towns and cities banded together to form the medieval communes, which were cities with republican governments or governments that were partly republican. These cities banded together to form, for example, the Hanseatic League. The goal was to produce greater protection of trade and manufacturing, and this produced a stable environment in which the merchants were able to prosper.

Merchants took advantage of improved trade routes, such as the Silk Road, to import expensive goods.
