The gladiatorial fights of the ancient world have had a mostly symbolic effect upon the ages that followed them: they have been seen as representing inspirational bravery, the power of games for society, cruelty and savagery, and much more. It should be noted that such 'symbolic' influence has often had a moral dimension attached, with the gladiatorial games being generally seen by subsequent observers as a sign of moral decay or inadequacy.

In acient times it was a way to look away from the usual hustle and bustle of Roman life such as polatics, taxes, and the blood shed of war. Just as professional sport is today. In Med-evil times it was taking up space. Today it is looked upon as a work of wonder for it's amazing architechual beauty and design.

It was the first 360 degree amphitheatre in the world. It set the basis for many stadiums, domes, etc. that are so popular in America.

It was surprisingly sophisticated, as there is a lot to be learned of the Colosseum, including underground waterways used to fill the center for naval battles, underground passageways with trap doors and elevators, and much more.

The entertainment that took place there brought in a large amount of revenue, just like the stadiums nowadays.

The 2000 year old structure was and still is truly a great monument that surpassed all others in its time.

The Roman Colosseum influenced present day stadiums because of its facilities. It had underground passages and rooms just as modern stadia have under ground or under stand locker rooms etc. Also its seating arrangement gave everyone in the audience a good view of the action just as in modern stadia.
