In physics, any object that rolls makes work easier for humans. When men were faced with moving objects of other shapes (box, crate, etc.) or objects without shape (a load of freshly cut wheat), they had to carry the items, but often could not because of the shape (or lack of), the size, or the weight. Soon after the wheel, men realized they could attach a flat platform to wheels (buckboard or wagon) and load freight or crops regardless of shape, shapelessness, weight, height, or size. Soon after making a platform to attach to wheels and sitting on a flat bench where men felt all the bumps of the road, other men decided if they added springs between the platform and wheels, and between the bench seat and wheels, then "drivers" and their cargo did not get bounced around as much and damaged or bruised.

So with every new problem came a new solution, or an adaptation to the original invention. From stone wheels they made wooden wheels and platforms (wagons) to wagons/platforms with springs... to eventually, the train with metal wheels employing platforms (cars) with springs riding on a track, to electric street cars (with platforms, springs) moving along a street track fed by electric wires from above, to finally the automobile (cars, flatbed trucks, box-enclosed trucks), and when cars and trucks could not be increased in height because of existing bridges, men figured out how to increase length by adding a tow hitch and bar so they could hook "platforms" (example 2 semi trucks; example a car pulling a trailer) together to pull with the same engines. When men realized that length and height could not be expanded further for on the road, again because of bridges and the ability of engines to pull, they made buses that expand outward when parked. They added length to the cabs (driver area) on semis so men could sleep inside during long hauls of pulling more than one trailer.
