The location of Constantinople made it grow wealthy and prosperous because it is in between the Aegean and Black Sea. Also, it lies between the trade routes of Europe and Asia. The two seas provided safe shelter for ships to pass through and fro. That was an advantage of Constantinople, since trading ships, fishing boats, and warships were able to go through without worry.

Maybe it is connected with the Odyssey when Odysseus is lost on the way home and finds himself in a particular narrow pass where he has to make a decision as to which side he is going to steer his crew towards. On one side is the six headed, man eating monster Scylla and on the other is the whirlpool Charybdis which will lead to certain death.
