Rome's location was excellent for defense because it was/is located on hills which are easier to defend as the army would be firing down on those enemies who were trying to climb up and fight at the same time.

Constantinople lied (as still does, but now it is called Istanbul) on a promontory of the Marmara Sea in Turkey, by the straight which separates Europe and Asia and by an inlet. Therefore it was/is surrounded by water on three sides. It has seven hills which made the development of good fortifications easier.

Rome was on seven hills on the Tiber River. The hills were useful to spot enemies.
