European Feudalism is a system of mutual dependency. Chieftains who came into power over tracts of Roman land needed two things: serfs to reap the lands and warriors to protect the chieftain's holdings. To accomplish this, the chieftain would dole out grants of land (parcels) to warriors who gave him oaths of allegiance. The warriors could take profits from these lands in exchange for taxes, submission, and military service.

Some of these landed warriors had enough land to further divide it under lesser dependiaries, making further rungs of the social ladder. Over time, these early landholders evolved into kings, dukes, earls, and knights, lords over some and vassals under some.
