Ancient Romans and Greece had actually the same gods and goddesses, only with different names. They also worshiped them the same way.

The Roman or Greeks would build a temple for the god or goddess that it's dedicated for. This would take many years. After it's built, a celebration is started in the city or the town. Sacrifices are made. You could sacrifice only sacrifice food (except the god's or goddess's holy animal) and important items to them, such as clothes and toys. After that, the population feasted. This was repeated various times a year and brought great joy to the civilization.

For the most part the Roman and Greek religions were similar. The major pagan gods of Greece were the same major gods of ancient Rome only the names were different. The Roman religion had many minor gods and goddesses. Even people such as Julius Caesar was deified by the Roman Senate and a "Caesar" cult emerged. In ancient Rome however even the later emperors declared themselves as deities. This was different from Greece. The Romans were very much into more detailed and elaborate ceremonies then the Greeks.

Its Christian beliefs are in practically all major aspects exactly the same. Of course over time differences have arisen in Church rituals, clerical dress, rules regarding priests and monks and the way of crossing yourself, but that is all outer appearance and natural to happen over the course of 1,500 years. It is easiest to sum up why the two Churches split and what the differences in belief and organization are.

The two Churches split after a long-ongoing series of conflicts that basically boiled down to the question whether the Pope as Head of the Church of Rome was the spiritual leader of all Christendom or not; an ordinary power struggle. The Emperors of the East Roman Empire totally resented the idea that they or their subjects should in any way be subject to the Pope. The Emperor thought that if anyone should be considered the Head of Christendom, it should be himself. Plus, he had a Patriarch as Head of his own church organization and it was a given that the Patriarch was only answerable to the Emperor.

Finally, the two Church organizations split after the Byzantine Emperor decided he and his Church would have nothing more to do with the Pope. To this day, the Orthodox Church has no central leader. Every Orthodox Church is named after it country. So you have a Greek Orthodox Church, a Russian Orthodox Church etcetera and each country has its own national Patriarchs.

In terms of articles of faith, the major difference is a rather academic one: the Trinity. The Roman Catholic Church holds that Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one and indivisible and the Orthodox belief holds that the Holy Spirit is only connected to the Father, not to the Son. Both Churches formally hold that 'images' should not be prayed to, but both turn a blind eye at the fact that it happens nevertheless: Tradition-minded Orthodox believers pray to icons, Roman Catholics to statues of their Saints.
