Some people went on crusade to do penance for their sins, some of these by their own volition, and some under orders from the Church. Some people went on the crusades because they were ambitious, greedy, or hateful. The reasons people went certainly ranged from the highest to the lowest. One thing might be added, which is that whatever the reasons for the crusades were, they did not work as planned.
