Charlemagne:
to handle it himself
The empire of Charlemagne was in several ways a successor to the Roman Empire. Firstly, the Pope officially crowned him Emperor of the Romans". He took most of the former Roman lands in Europe, but expanded northward rater than to the south. He filled the power vacuum and drove away the barbarians who filled Europe when Rome fell. However, in most ways his empire was more akin the the Feudal kingdoms to come.
The three ways that Rome was ruled were first the monarvhy, second, the republic and third, the principate.
Your textbook may have other thoughts on the matter, but generally speaking Charlemagne is credited with three major achievements: 1. He reunited most of continental Western Europe under his rule and was created the first "Emperor of the Romans" since the fall of the Roman Empire in the 6th century 2. He initiated the "Carolingian Renaissance", ordering the monks in his Empire to systematically collect and copy the works of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Practically all the ancient Greek and Roman scriptures that have survived did so because of this order and because of the copies that were then made 3. He (forcibly) converted the Saxons and many other peoples east of the river Rhine to Christianity.

Charlemagne studied himself, and had his children educated, setting an example to the people around him. He strongly encouraged the members of his court to be educated. He opened schools and stated the intention that all free people have access to education. He brought educated people from other lands into his court with the view to having them help in the education process.
