The name Drybread is an English translation of the German name Trockenbrot. Trocken meaning dry and brot meaning bread. Alternate spellings are Truckenbrodt and Druckenbrod. Written records of that name date back to the 12th century in Germany. The Trockenbrots were immigrants to the United States. The story from my own family history is that during the 18th century two Trockenbrot brothers were involved in a lawsuit with each other. The condition of the lawsuit was that whoever lost had to change their last name to Drybread.
