Bridgette (or Brigitte) is a combination of the two words "Bride", and "Gadget". I was a popular nickname in the 19th century, as wives were considered chattel or property of the husband, and as such could be "requested" to jack up the car to repair the tire, or paint the kitchen while the husband painted the neighbor's wife.

It fell out of favor when the "Bridgettes" found the had the tools and skills to repair the pool boy.
