The middle ages started with wars, so medieval warfare started when the middle ages started. You could pick any date you like best for this, 400, 410, 476, 500, or some other date of the time. There were always wars.
Guns were invented in China, and were subsequently either reinvented or introduced into Europe during the High Middle Ages, possibly in the first half of the 13th century. All of the guns of the Middle Ages were smooth bored and all used loose gunpowder.
Most of the cannon were muzzle loading, but breech loading cannon of a rather primitive sort were introduced during the 13th century. Breech loading systems were too delicate for the largest guns, but also too bulky for the smallest. The breech loaders were typically swivel guns, light cannons mounted on a wall or the gunwale of a ship, so as to swivel in any direction. They typically had a bore of 25 millimeters or so (1 inch).
The medieval guns included cannons of various sizes and configurations. The largest of these were rather large, and could be used to batter down gates, and sometimes even walls of castles. Superguns, like the one in Scotland called Mons Meg, were among the largest. Mons Meg was built in 1449, and fired balls 20 inches in diameter. It was supported by a carriage that held the barrel nearly horizontally. Mons Meg was built just as the Middle Ages were drawing to a close, but it carried on a tradition established earlier.
The large cannon included not only field guns, but also mortars. The mortar called the Pumhart von Steyr, which is a product of the early 15th century, is an example of the largest of these. It could throw a ball of 690 kilograms (1650 pounds) about 600 meters (650 yards).
Small guns called hand cannons were introduced, probably during the 13th century. Hand cannons were not held in the hand, but were typically mounted on a stock. Their barrels were short, however, and about the size of the barrel of a modern pistol.
