The Romans first invaded Britain in 55 BC under Julius Caesar. He had to withdraw and tried again the next year, but withdrew again. Claudius officially invaded Britain and made it a province in 43 AD. Between these two dates there was an active Roman presence in Britain. The future emperor Vespasian secured a lot of territory and made allies. There were troops and trading colonies in Britain long before Claudius made his "invasion" although the entire island was not subdued. Britain officially became a Roman province in 43 AD.

Julius Caesar made a try in 53 BC but conditions were not favorable so he retreated. In 43 AD Claudius was credited with "conquoring" Britian, although there was a Roman presence there and had been for quite a few years. Officially, it's 43 AD.

Th Romans arrived in England in 55 BC. Julius Caesar stooped off there and came back the next year. He made contact and made treaties with certain British tribes before leaving. However trade and contact between the Romans and the Britaiins continued. There have been hordes of coins found that are dated 50 years before the famous invasion by Claudius.
