Before people had wood floors or carpet, they had slate floors. Back then (not certain of the exact era) they would put hay down on their floor to prevent it from being slippery, these floors were dangerously slick. In those days they called hay 'thresh'. Thresh was put down, and a small barrier was put by the entry way to prevent the thresh from being tracked outside from people coming and going. Therefore, it was a threshold
