A Mother and Father couldn't decide between Fred or Rick so they named him Fred or Rick--- Frederick
LOL! That's funny!
Actually, it is an early German name that became common in England (Frederik) and France (Frederic). The meaning is peaceful ruler. As far as I have gathered it is responsible for the first names Fred(erick), Rick, Eric...and the nickname Fritz (and their variations). There are many variations (nearly 40). As uncommon as the name is becoming it was once a very popular choice as a first name.
I hope this helps anyone looking for clues to the origin of this name and/or family history.
