The first complete circuit of walls around Rome was built by Servius Tullius, the 6th king of Rome, in the 6th century BC. They were called the Servian Walls. They were rebuilt in the 380s and 370s BC during the Republic probably because they fell in disrepair. Its length was 11 kilometres (7 miles). The biggest surviving fragment of these walls is near the main railway station.
After this the Romans did not bother to build new walls for centuries even though the city had greatly outgrown the old Servian Walls because they did not expect the city to be attacked. This changed in 270 AD the Alemanni (a Germanic people) attacked the city. Following this, emperor Aurelian built new walls, the Aurelian Walls, between 271 and 275 AD. Because the city had grown enormously, these walls were much longer: 19 kilometres (12 miles). Several kilometres of these still exist and they can be followed by car. Some of its great gates also still exist, including those on the famous Appian Way.

Hadrian's wall on the borders between England and Scotland is very famous The Antonine wall is less well known as is the walls Of Lugo in Spain
Emperor Hadrian wanted to protect the empire. The wall was there to protect the north of England from raids by Scottish tribes. The Romans were unable to conquer the Scots, so they built a wall to keep them out. There was also another border wall, further north, built by Emperor Antonius, but it 'only' lasted for about 150 years. Hadrian's wall lasted for around 500 years, and many parts of it still exist today.
Hadrian built the wall across the width of the northern part of Britain - about 73 miles - with a series of military forts, mainly to keep out the warring tribes to the north (in what is now Scotland) and to mark the boundary of the Roman Empire. It was ordered to be built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, when he visited Britain in AD 122. Much of it still remains to this day, and it is a popular tourist attraction. It's called Hadrian's Wall.
Hadrian was a Roman Emperor. He was the adopted son of Emperor Trajan, who was the adopted son of Emperor Nerva. Hadrian was succeeded by his adoptive son, Antonius Pius. His most famous achievement was the commissioning the building of Hadrian's wall to secure Rome's northernmost frontier and symbolise Rome's power.
