At that time, there are two catholic power: In Rome and Constantine. The emperor of Constantine was overwhelmed by the Military power of the Muslin and was concerned about them invading his territory and wrote to the pope about this. The Pope responses by callig for a crusade: a volunteer army of the people after he promised rewards in heavens and monetary rewards- that he will share the taxes collected by the church with them. It was a great success. 60,000 joined in the first wave. The purpose for the crusaders, given by the pope, was to take Jerusalem from the Muslins. Another 100,000 followed shortly. This was near the end of 11th Century.
