The credit for preserving the works of the ancient Greeks and Romans goes to the Christian monks in their monasteries. They recognized the value of the ancients' writings and preserved them as many of the ancient values were identical with Christianity's values.

Who were more medically advanced the Greeks or the Romans. why?

A qualified, definitely the Romans. The Romans learned their medical knowledge from the Greeks, but they improved many of the surgical instruments and medicines handed down from the Greeks. Their military hospitals were the most advanced the the ancient world and their types of surgical instruments are still used today. It wasn't until the nineteenth century that "modern" improvements were made in the medical field.

How did medical knowledge grow during the renaissance?

It only grew a little: real knowledge of the causes and effective treatment of diseases is a thing of (mostly) the 20th century. The Renaissance saw some progress in the understanding of things like blood circulation and (mostly) anatomy. But the study of the ancient Romans and Greeks did not lead to great insights: the ancients had scant knowledge in medical affairs and much of what they taught was incorrect.

What are the stages in the development of Scientific thought from the middle ages to modern times?

Scientific scholars from the period of the Scientific Revolution questioned the authority of the ancient Greeks. They began to challenge the works of ancient scholars such as Galen and Ptolemy. Vesalius dissected actual human bodies to find out about human anatomy. He realized that Galen had made mistakes. When Copernicus applied mathematics to the study of the movements of the sun and the planets in the sixteenth century, he found out that Ptolemy's assumptions were incorrect. Thinkers such as Bacon and Descartes believed that scholars should not depend solely on the writings of ancient Greek and Roman philosophers, but use scientific approaches such as experimentation, observation, and mathematics to acquire knowledge about the universe. Galileo and Newton actually experimented and made very careful observations to make some of their discoveries. Newton revealed that the universe followed certain laws, and that human beings could understand the laws. Over time, most people came to accept this new way of thinking and answering questions about the physical world.

Did the Romans take medicine from Greece?

In a way, yes. The Greeks developed the theory of the four humours, which the Romans continued, and introduced the follow on theory of opposites. Both empires were observers and spent alot of time observing the sick, and it is easy to think that the Romans only copied the Greeks, because they were the first to discover many theories. The Romans had many more new ideas than the Greeks in terms of medicine; Sanitation, Sewage system, etc. Other than that, they shared very similar views. They both had herbal remedies, doctors, amputations, theories, basic surgery, cleanliness, and both believed strongly in the gods.
