According to The Bible (Genesis), the first man, Adam, gave all the animals their names.

Linguistically, the names for objects developed when verbal communication within tribes began, first as a series of gestures, grunts or of imitative sounds (e.g. whistling for the wind, shouts for thunder) that could convey a given meaning to another human. When animals were domesticated, various sounds were used along with actions to train them. As people developed larger communities, the same words were taught to their children and became languages.

Over the years, modern languages and their written counterparts developed, and names are passed between them, sometimes altered in spelling. But simple sign languages and sounds are still used between groups that do not share a common language, such as the jungle peoples of Malaysia.
